MORE MILK STOUT BLOG:

Part two of the last one.  Tonight we get the 4 Hands Gingerbread Chocolate Milk Stout.  Super Excited about this one.  This is part two of the 3pack that Goose gave me for XMas.  As usual, John is over to help out.  Without further ado:

Brewer: 4 Hands
Beer Name:  Gingerbread Chocolate Milk Stout
Beer Style:  Chololate Milk Stout w/ gingerbread?
Price: ?

Appearance:  Dark, can't see much.  Not very clear.  A little hint of red hues at the bottom.

Aroma:  A slight hint of gingerbread maybe.  Not a whole lot here.  Actually I'm getting a little cinnamon as well.

Mouthfeel:  Very tingly.  Almost jumps in your mouth.

Taste:  It tastes like gingerbread.  How the hell do they do this stuff.  John says he expected a little more spice but it is on the sweeter end of things.  That cinammon smell is coming out in the beer as well.  Along with nutmeg as well.  Think pumpin pie spices.  That's a good place to start.  It makes me wish it was -10 and I had a giant fire going.  And maybe "Elf" was on.  Think a prefect XMas beer.  The gingerbread really overpowers the chocolate.  John and I agree that this is not a chocolate milk stout; it is simply a gingerbread stout.  Different but not as good as either the regular or the blackberry that we had a couple weeks back.

Overall Rating:  John says 3.  I agree.  Same here.  Too much cinammon; not enough chocolate.  Seems like something else we have blogged recently but I can't remember what.

Next Up:  Two Oatmeal Stouts.

Brewer:  Evil Twin Brewing
Beer Name: No Hero Oatmeal Stout
Beer Style: Oatmeal Stout
Price:  About $10 for a 4 pack.

Appearance:  John says, "Whoa!  Motor Oil!"  As The Stranger says in The Big Lebowski: "darker then a back steer's tuchus on a moonless praire night."  The beer abides.

Aroma:  Maybe a tiny bit of black licorice.  Like a good stout, nothing much to give it away.  John says nothing there.  Thank good it only looks like a steer's tuchus.

Mouthfeel:  Very smooth; nothing like the Gingerbread stout tingle.

Taste:  Bitter for a stout.  Almost taste like an acorn or some bitter nut.  John is tasting plums.  I am getting the earthiness of the oatmeal for sure.  John says it's bitter with a hint of band-aid.  Maybe he was doing a Nelly impersonation and put the band aid on the inside of his cheek?  He says something ain't right and I'm agreeing with him.  I had two cans of this previously and I really liked it.  Maybe it's the contrast with the sweet gingerbread that's throwing us off.  We are going to cleanse the palate and retry.  After some mango salsa and chips, we both agree that is better.  Still bitter but it needed to warm up for sure.

Overall rating:  John says 2.75.  I say a 3.5 only because the first two were better.  I am wondering if this one didn't get a little frozen and mess with the taste during one of the cold spells we had.

Last one:

Brewer: 2nd Shift
Beer Name:  Oatmeal Milk Stout
Beer Style:  Oatmeal Milk Stout
Price:  $10 for a 4 pack

Appearance:   Dark as steer' tuchus etc.  Looks like motor oil after it's been in your 78 Peugot engine for about a year and a half.

Aroma:  You can smell this one.  Oatmeal, anise, a little fruit; maybe a plum or apricot?  A lot to take in on this one.    John says it smells like a stout.

Mouthfeel:  Very smooth; stoutish.  Nice finish but very mellow.

Taste:  Bitter as well.  A little black licorice on this one.  John says it has a roasted taste.  I'm getting a slight fruit hint as well.  Not the dark plum taste but a slightly lighter fruit; cherrys maybe?  Not sure but it's more complex then the Evil Twin for sure.  John and I agree that this one is better even though my initial assessment was the opposite.  John says its smooth as a black steer's tuchus on a moonless prairie night.

Overall Rating:  John and I agree again.  3.0 for both of us.  Not bad; not great.

until next time!!!!
